Achilles welcomes anyone with a disability who wants to run. Membership in the Achilles Track Club is free and includes races, coaching, workouts, team T-shirts and our newsletter, The Achilles Heel.
Achilles members run with such disabilities as stroke, cerebral palsy, paraplegia, arthritis, amputation, visual impairment, MS, cystic fibrosis, cancer, traumatic head injuries, transplants, and other conditions often thought to be reasons to stay "out of the running."
Some Achilles runners are on crutches, others use wheelchairs; some are experienced athletes and others are exercising for the first time. The only prerequisite is an interest in running and a willingness to try.
All Achilles members participate in running workouts and enter races. They enjoy the companionship of other members and volunteers and the lift one gets to both body and mind from regular exercise.
You needn't worry about what to wear for your first workout. We are not trend setters. This means wearing something loose and comfortable, suitable to the weather. The most important item is a good pair of running shoes. Make sure you can move comfortably and be ready to exercise.
Don't be concerned about being out of shape. People who have never exercised before tend to improve faster than those in better shape! Besides, the point is to have fun exercising. Whether you run a 6-minute mile pace or a 45-minute pace, we welcome all speeds and all abilities.
