Achilles Trip to South Africa a Success!

During the week of May 21, 2000, Achilles NYC teamed up with British Airway's 'Cargo For Good' and delivered over 50 computers and various adaptive software programs and equipment to the Ethembeni School for the Blind and Physically Disabled in South Africa. Ethembeni, which meanse 'Place of Hope', maintains an Achilles Kids Chapter. The school is located 30 minutes outside Durban and is attended by over 320 students from rural, disadvantaged families within the KwaZulu-Natal area. The children live on the campus and range in age from 4 to 19.

Ethembeni provides traditional academic education to its students, but recently sought to complement their curriculum with trade and practical skills training, with the main focus on computer skills training. Unfortunately, the school's budget prohibited the attainment of this goal. Ethembeni Principal, Braam Mouton, and Achilles Project Director, Adrienne Cooney, met in November while Braam was in NYC with two of his blind student runners for the Marathon. After discussing the school's needs and goals, Adrienne implemented and directed a 6-month fundraising project with the assistance of a dedicated team of volunteers and sponsors. Amongst the amazing volunteers were Michael Cooney (President, British Airways' 'Cargo for Good'), Christine Sandrib, (Achilles Fundraiser Extraordinaire), Eddie Montanez (Achilles), Tom Hoffman (Continental Airlines), Sherri Stanford (Continental Airlines), Melissa Penn (Achilles), and Jimmy Davis (Photographer, Achilles).

The staff and students extended their appreciation by organizing a special assembly, which included their award-winning choir, a drama presentation, traditional Zulu dancing and singing as well as many personal 'thank you's' from the staff, students and board members. "This is an important day in the histyory of Ethembeni School," said Principal, Braam Mouton during the ceremony. "The efforts of Achilles, British Airways, Continental and all of the sponsors have helped make Ethembeni a real place of hope." As you can see, the trip was a resounding success!
